Sometimes, but not always. Some launch monitors and simulator programs charge a recurring fee, and others are a one-time purchase. Many are a mix: the hardware is yours, but certain features, courses or data depend on a paid plan. Check the terms for the exact model before you buy.
Where subscription costs usually show up
| Cost type | What it usually means | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| One-time hardware purchase | You buy the monitor and use its core features with no ongoing fee. | Which features are included, and whether any need an upgrade. |
| Optional subscription | The monitor works without it, but extras (more data, practice tools, course access) sit behind a plan. | Whether the extras are ones you'd actually use. |
| Required subscription | Key features, or the simulation itself, stop or are limited without an active plan. | What happens if you cancel, and whether the price can change. |
| Separate software | Simulator software and course libraries are sold apart from the monitor, as a license or a recurring plan. | Which software works with your monitor, and how it is billed. |
What we know and what we don't
Pricing models change often, and the same brand may offer different plans over time. We aren't quoting subscription prices here because they would go out of date and we can't verify them from this page. Before you commit, confirm current pricing and included features on the manufacturer's official site, and read what is included with the hardware.

- Add up the multi-year total. Hardware price plus several years of any fees is a fairer comparison than the sticker price alone.
- Decide what you'll use. If you only want swing data for practice, an optional plan may not matter. If you want to play full courses, software costs matter more.
- Check offline use. Find out which features need an active plan or an internet connection.
- Remember the other costs. A computer, projector, screen and mat add up too. Our projector and computer guide covers the hardware side.
Subscriptions can also affect resale value, since a used monitor's features may depend on the account or plan. We cover that in Do golf simulators hold their resale value?
